Toronto Film Festival has selected Tel Aviv as the first city in its new City to City programming sidebar.
In recognition of the continuing rise in reputation of the Israeli film industry and Tel Aviv’s own 100th anniversary celebrations, Toronto will program a number of Israeli films where the city itself plays an important part in the film.
Seven films have been selected for City to City, including such classics as Big Dig (1969), Big Eyes (1972) and Life According to Agfa (1992), the documentary A History of Israeli Cinema, Part 1 (covering the years 1933-78) as well as three films receiving their international premieres – Cannes prize-winner Keren Yedaya’s second film, Jaffa; Kirot, Danny Lerner’s follow-up to Frozen Days seen at the 2007 Sydney Festival and Phobidilia, the feature-film debut by brothers Yoav and Doron Paz.
The Festival, which runs from 10-19 September, is one of the most important festivals in the world. Attracting hoardes of commercial distributors from North America, Toronto is seen as the shop front to the Americas. In addition to the City to City sidebar, Toronto will include screenings of Google Baby, the main prize-winner at Docaviv, Five Hours From Paris, Lebanon and the controversial Eyes Wide Open.
