In what has been described as an exceptional year for Israeli film, A Matter of Size leads the Ophirs field with 13 nominations, announced by the Israel Academy of Film at the end of July. But it is the film Ajami that is seen as the frontrunner for the main awards. Ajami picked up the Wolgin Award for best Israeli feature film at the recent Jerusalem International Film Festival (A Matter of Size was the opening film) and it will be screened at the Melbourne International Film Festival 2009 in August.

With the winning film going forward to represent Israel at the Academy Awards, it is anticipated that voting will bear its chances in mind. Both Waltz With Bashir and Beaufort received nominations for best foreign language film in the last 2 years, but came away empty handed. With the subject of both films being Lebanon and the military, it is generally felt that this will rule out both Lebanon and The Loners as being selected for best Israeli film of the year.

The big surprise was the snubbing of Eyes Wide Open, which received only 2 nominations (supporting actor and production design). The first Israeli film to be confirmed at the prestigious Toronto Film Festival, Eyes Wide Open was seen as a potential major contender for the main awards. Lead actor Zohar Strauss picked up best actor award at Jerusalem, ahead of all five best actor Ophir nominees.
